Chapter 18
The Land with Music

In his autobiography, Rotten, John Lydon tells the story of the time he and Sid Vicious were walking down the King’s Road minding their own business when a Sloane hollered to them from her car – were they those punk chaps and would they like to come to her ‘coming out’ party? In more recent years the Season has been taken over by the offspring of oligarchs but this was the 1970s, and the tradition for the British upper class to hold parties and ‘at homes’ to formally introduce their daughters to Society to find a suitable husband was still de rigueur. The two boys accepted the challenge. On the appointed evening and accompanied by a grubby, stripper-dressed Nancy Spungen, they toddled down to a club called ‘Wedgies’ that once stood opposite Peter Jones on the King’s Road, (and was frequently the venue for the ‘Deb of the Year’ competition) where the party was being held in its ballroom.
